Servizio Civile. "It will be all right", un videomessaggio per ripartire insieme

"It will be all right, these are difficult days but we must remain united". The Universal Civil Service project "Students without Borders 2" of the Cultural Association Entropia restarts from a multilingual video message. Today that the borders are the walls of our houses, Entropia sends a positive signal to young people, so that they remain strong and supportive, remember to be part of the same large community and be the first to react and spread courage, especially in view of phase 2.
The civil service, suspended during the blockade to protect the greeting of the volunteers, was reactivated throughout the national territory and the four volunteers of "No Border students 2" also resumed activities from 15 April, in mixed mode (in presence and in remote). The activities have been partially remodeled to offer "support to foreigners" and information, also in language, on the new government provisions that will gradually emerge. For the rest, the project continues to pursue the organization of integration between Italian and international students on the campus and in the urban area of Cosenza: in addition to specific training, the volunteers are dedicating themselves to the writing of the Fatti Al Cubo newspaper and the program radio "No Borders", which will report the voices of international students on Radio Ciroma.
The volunteers were enthusiastic about the resumption of activities, since the spirit of civil service is to support the community and never will enter at this moment will feel like making a concrete contribution.
The students who reported on the appeal by joining the Association's video message come from: Egypt, Yemen, Argentina, Paraguay, Tanzania, Libya, Indonesia, Pakistan, Ecuador, Sudan, Mozambique, Vietnam, Madagascar. A trip around the world in two minutes, because the pandemic has made us equal and equally defenseless, and because the common good can only come from the union, the encounter and the comparison between culture, languages and different experiences.

Meeting of the project "Studenti senza Frontiere 2" with the volunteers of the Universal Civil Service to remodulate activities in compliance with the preventive measures dictated by Dpcm 8 March 2020 and the last rectoral decret. The DAM remains, for now, reachable by phone, email, social channels, as well as Fatti al Cubo. Starting today, the Association also provides a shopping service with home delivery for international students on campus, unable to move (the request must be forwarded on Facebook / messenger). We are then preparing Internet stations equipped and available on request, for online lessons and exams, to be allocated to those who did not own a pc. Finally, we will try to launch the BabelTeam in experimental form, a distance version of our Wednesday language tea. Self-organize to resist in the emergency and leave no one behind: we remain human.

International Carnival is back organized by “Associazione Culturale Entropia” at Università della Calabria. As done last year, within the project “Servizio Civile Universale” titled “Studenti senza Frontiere 2”, and with the help of the four volunteers in service, the association organized two intercultural appointments.
Tuesday February 18, from 5.00pm, italian and international students are invited to participate in the Carnival Mask Lab coordinated by the artist Christian Cosentino. The masks and carnival costumes can be worn at the Carnival party held on Thursday February 20, starting at 21:30 at DAM.
How do you make a mask? How and why do we use masks? What does Carnival represent? The answer to all these questions can be really different in an international environment, in which different cultures and traditions coexist. The mask is a universal symbolic element, present in all cultures with different meanings. Frequently it’s associated with cults, but it is also a way of changing one’s identity, to transform into something else or even to represent one’s true identity. It’s even a symbol of power, from the old traditions until the recent comic books culture.
The masks, provided by the association, can be decorated with drawings, ink, colors and any other material: prioritizing, of course, recycled materials, that all the participants are welcome to bring and help gathering (colored plastic, old accessories, pieces of fabric, etc) and setting free creativity, the masks take form, under the supervision of Christian Cosentino. During the creative lab, the participants will be offered “chiacchiere”, a typical sweet of the italian carnival culture, made by the volunteers.
The aim of the “No Borders Students 2" project is to stimulate socializing between Italian and international students at Unical and to create a more inclusive and participatory community on the campus, valorizing the cultures and traditions of the various countries of origin. A creative and practical laboratory, where everyone sits around a table and gets involved. It is a festive expedient to build a true multicultural community.

The "Babel Tea", an event organized by the Cultural Association Entropia with the support of the volunteers of the Universal Civil Service included in the new "Students Without Borders 2" project, returns at the DAM of the University of Calabria. Starting from Wednesday 22 January 2020, every week, from 17:30 onwards, students of different nationalities will meet at the DAM (polifunzionale building) with a cup of tea: it will be a moment of aggregation and informal training and above all a way to eliminate linguistic and cultural barriers. A great moment to integrate the different cultures present on the campus and to practice languages, useful both for Italians who intend to learn or improve linguistic abilities and for international students interested in learning or improving Italian.
Last year's Babel Tea hosted over a hundred students from China, Indonesia, Pakistan, Egypt, Nigeria, Ecuador, Paraguay, Turkey, Morocco, Argentina, Libya, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Sudan, Kurdistan, United States, Mozambique, Yemen, Iran, Vietnam, Portugal, the Netherlands, Syria, Madagascar and many other countries. Students who, in addition to being enriched from a cultural and linguistic point of view, have found a friendly and welcoming place in which they can spend every moment of the day not only during the events, a place in which many friendships were born and continued even outside of it. Conversation tables are an opportunity to get involved, to test your skills and get out of your comfort zone and the virtual world.
The "No Borders Students" are pleased to invite all the students of the Campus to take part in the Babel Tea. To stay updated on the projects' activities (as Linguistic Tandem, International Jam Session, intercultural evenings, urban trekking, etc) there is Entropia DAM page and the group “No Borders – Studenti Senza Frontiere” on Facebook.
